Choosing a DVD or online class given by an accredited practitioner "is very crucial," Alexandra advises, because "you are not getting the hands-on guidance which you would get in a class," she explains.

According to yoga instructor Laura Pearce: "Core strength can be improved through a wide range of yoga activities.
"In addition to the apparent balancing work, there are the vast abdominal maneuvers in dynamic practices, such as the Chaturanga Vinyasa sequence's high-low plank combo.
Side plank, half-moon, and backbends in yoga are fantastic techniques to develop the lower back and gluteal muscles, as well as oblique activation postures such as half-moon, where you face sideways with one arm, and leg lifted high, the other limbs resting on the floor.
